farewell to heatwave the betta

I was just tidying up around my fishtank and spotted this black thing on the floor - I picked it up and it was my betta's fin. I thought he was still swimming around in his 29-gallon tank, but when I checked, he was gone. It was a real punch to the gut - I realized he must've jumped out and didn't make it. I've had him for over a year now, got him from Petsmart, and he'd always been healthy. To be honest, I'm pretty sure it's my fault he jumped - I didn't have a lid on the tank. I used to have one, but then I switched to a light that didn't need a hood, and I never got around to getting a new lid. I was planning on adding some floating plants soon, but I guess I waited too long. I'll post my water parameters in a bit.
Edit: I know my tank is cycled, and I've only got a few unbroken test tubes left. My ammonia levels are 0ppm, but my pH is way too high - it's at 8.2. I've got no idea what caused it to spike like that. Do you guys think the high pH might've driven him to jump?

I feel for you, it's really heartbreaking when we lose a pet.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I'd like to offer you some help with your tank - I could send you some salvinia minima for free, you'd just need to cover the shipping cost of $3.70 if you're interested.

I don't have an Etsy shop name I can share right now, but you can PM me and I can give you the link, I'm legit, I just have plants I need to get rid of.
