Hi everyone,
I've been digging around online for a bit and I'm having trouble finding much info on masked julies. I know they're algae-eaters and they spawn in caves, but I'm curious - how many should I keep together? They're supposed to form monogamous pairs, but I've also read that they need to be in groups of 6 or more. Can anyone share some extra insights on these fish? I'm planning a 40 breeder tank with a colony of N. Similis. Thanks in advance!

I was searching online and I found this info on Masked Julies. They're a type of cichlid, native to Lake Tanganyika. Apparently, they're pretty peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful cichlids. I also found that they're primarily herbivores, feeding on algae and plant matter. They're cave spawners, so they'll need some hiding places in the tank. It's recommended to keep them in groups of 6 or more, but they do form monogamous pairs. I'm thinking this might work well with my 40 breeder tank and the N. Similis colony I'm planning.

I appreciate the link, I've actually come across that website in my search. However, I'm still unsure about the best way to keep them - some sources say pairs only due to aggression and territorial behavior, while others recommend groups of six or more. Given their cost where I am, I'm hesitant to invest in a group of six, only to have two pair up and the rest get picked off. Have you had any personal experience with masked julies?
