I'm in the market for a new aquarium, preferably one that's 48x18x36. My current 75-gallon tank just won't cut it, especially since I've recently sourced some Altum Angelfish that can grow up to 30 inches from fin tip to tip.

I'm open to buying a high-quality used tank if that's a viable option. However, some of the quotes I've received for a new one are pretty steep, so I'm looking for some alternative resources.

I've had pretty good luck finding tanks used on Craigslist, but if you haven't checked yet, you might want to take a look at glasscages.com.

Al, I've got a 120gal used Oceanic that's pretty old but built like a tank. I'm curious, do you reseal your used tanks? I'm thinking I probably should've done that with mine, considering its age.

I've got a couple of glass tanks that I'm quite fond of. One of them, my "show" tank, is a real gem - not entirely sure if it's an Oceanic, but I picked it up used and I just love the height. It's 48 inches long, 13 inches wide, and a nice 30 inches tall. If it were a bit wider, say 18 inches, that would be perfect, but as it stands, it's still a great tank. Plus, the wrought iron stand is a real showpiece in its own right, standing at 18 inches tall - it keeps the tank at a comfortable height, making maintenance a breeze since I can still easily reach over the top.

I had an experience with a Glass Cages tank at work that's relevant here. We had a six foot by two foot by two foot model with a built-in overflow, stand, and Lifeguard filtration system come up in a surplus auction. The winning bid was either $2.50 or $3.50 - I'm still trying to recall. What's notable is that it held water perfectly, no leaks to speak of. As you can imagine, the thick glass made it incredibly heavy.

By the way, I've got a similar story to chippy's. I once stumbled upon a sweet deal on a glass cage tank at a local auction house. The dimensions were crazy - six feet long, two feet wide, and two feet tall, with a built-in overflow, stand, and lifeguard filtration. I think the winning bid was either two-fifty or three-fifty - can't recall exactly. But here's the kicker: it was a beast of a tank, with thick glass that could withstand a small earthquake. And the best part? It didn't leak a drop.

Honestly, if it's not leaking, I leave it be. My tanks' silicone beads aren't pretty, some are 15+ years old.

Re-sealing's a major undertaking. To do it right, you'd need to strip the caulk, separate the panels, clean and reapply - it's a ton of work. I've only stripped the caulk and reapplied to fix minor leaks. Anything serious and that tank becomes a reptile tank. I've been on the receiving end of a 75-gallon disaster - what a mess.

I left mine alone, but I do appreciate a good silicone bead on the seams - it's a nice touch. That said, I'm a bit anxious about the state of mine, so I appreciate the advice.

I left it be, mainly due to the hassle of resealing. Had a bad experience as a kid, didn't do it right and it was a real pain. I do appreciate a good silicone bead, so I'm a bit anxious about mine holding up. Fingers crossed it keeps holding water.

So I am going to need a taller aquarium. Right now I have a standard 75 gallon that is 48 inches long.

I am wanting 48x18x36 as I just sourced some Altum Angelfish, and they can get 30 inches from fin tip to tip.

I am not opposed to buying a good quality used tank.

A 110 extra high (XH) has the same footprint as your 75 but is 30” tall. You can use the same stand which is a plus.
