Your understanding of the relationship between potassium and pH is partially correct, but the overall concept is flawed. To clarify, potassium ions in your tank, regardless of their concentration, have no practical effect on pH. These ions are typically part of dissolved salts such as potassium sulfate, phosphate, chloride, or carbonate. The key point is that free potassium ions do not react with water to form hydroxides, which means they do not influence pH levels in your tank.

I'm still wondering if I correctly identified my shell dwelling cichlid as a lamprologus ocellatus. I based my guess on the goldish edge to his dorsal fin, which I read is a characteristic of males. But I'm not entirely sure since the pictures I've seen of this species show some variation. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I'm not super confident in my Shellie ID skills, but the pic looks somewhat similar to a lamprologus ocellatus. You might want to try posting on cichlid-forum.com, they've got a ton of experts who can probably give you a definitive answer.
