Good call on the salt mix. Old salt can definitely throw things off. Let us know how it goes after you tweak the flow. If they're still gasping, we can dig deeper into other causes.

Yep, and if all else fails, a water change never hurts. Sometimes it's the simplest fix.

Also, what's your pH looking like? Low oxygen can drop it, and that'll stress them out even more. Just another thing to check while you're troubleshooting.
