Sand can be tricky for root feeders. Are you using any root tabs or liquid ferts? They might need more nutrients to really thrive.

Mine are in a 30-gallon with dirted substrate. They're monsters now, almost too big. Gonna have to trim soon.

I've got one in a 10-gallon betta tank. It's kinda outgrown the space but the betta loves hiding in it.
