I've had a similar issue with a peace lily. A new growth pushed against the back of the tank, forcing the plant away from the glass. I've trimmed it back multiple times, but now I'm thinking of redesigning the lid with larger openings. This will also give me room for an external filter inlet and outlet, which I'll need soon.

New setup's in place, moved the Chinese Evergreen to the other side, where I service the tank, so maintenance just got easier. I'll have to reach around it to feed the fish, basically over the top of the hang-on filter. Java ferns are loving it, no longer in the shade of the other plant, so they're getting more light now.
