Setting up a saltwater tank is no trivial pursuit. It requires dedication, a willingness to learn, and a significant investment of time and resources. Not only must you meticulously set up the tank, but you'll also need to commit to regular maintenance, including water changes and monitoring water chemistry. Ensuring the water has the right salinity levels and filtering it through an RO unit are just a couple of the many tasks you'll need to stay on top of. This level of commitment will undoubtedly make it more challenging and expensive to run compared to a freshwater tank.

That being said, I'm not trying to discourage you. Keeping a marine tank can be an incredibly rewarding hobby, but it's essential to understand that the reward comes from the work and research that goes into it. If you or your girlfriend are genuinely interested in the intricacies of marine life and the process of recreating a piece of the ocean in your home, then it might be an excellent hobby for you. However, if the interest is superficial, I'd recommend exploring the freshwater section of a reputable aquatics shop to see if there's something that piques your interest. Even freshwater tanks require some research, and that's what makes fishkeeping so captivating – the opportunity to learn and understand the needs of the fish you keep.
