Fish are low maintenance, no arguments, and they don't empty your bank account when they're gone.

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend buying sickly fish from a chain pet store. They just keep stocking them, treating them poorly, and selling them off. It's a never-ending cycle.
If you do feel sorry for them, try haggling for a heavy discount. It's usually the bettas that suffer the most in big pet stores - stuck in those tiny, dirty tanks with no room to swim.
If you're interested in rescuing them, you could try returning the fish if it doesn't survive and getting a refund. Maybe if enough stores start losing stock, they'll rethink their approach or reconsider selling bettas altogether.
