I've kept hengeli in the past, albeit in a rather overcrowded tank - 16 of them in 54 liters, don't judge me, it was early days. They'd congregate around the massive anubias that took up half the tank, even with low lighting. I paired them with a betta and later a honey gourami, both worked out well and seemed to boost their activity levels. Over the five years I had them, they'd regularly try to breed, so I'd say they're relatively low maintenance. Given their breeding habits in captivity, I'd bet yours are from a fish farm, not wild-caught.
If I were you, I'd ensure the lighting isn't too harsh and provide more hiding spots - the more, the merrier, as they say. Adding some corydoras or a honey gourami could be a good move, depending on your tank's specifics. I'd steer clear of bettas, though, as they can be hit or miss. Floating plants are a good starting point - give it a shot and see if it makes a difference.
