Honestly, I wouldn't even think about putting a clown in a 5 gallon, it's just not enough space. As for a clown goby, I'm not sure, I have mine in a 30 gallon and it's super active, always jumping between rocks. I just don't think a 5 gallon would be enough for it, personally.

I've read they can get up to 2.5" in captivity, sometimes bigger, but I'm not sure if that's the case for all species. I've seen some that were pretty small too - around 3cm, but I'm guessing they might still be growing.

I voted yes, as they can technically survive in a 5.5 gallon tank. However, personally, I wouldn't put any marine fish in a tank that small - the risks just seem too high for my liking.

I'd say they can easily reach 2-3 inches, especially if they're healthy and well-established.

No way, 2-3 inches is huge. I can see why you guys are saying a 5 gallon tank is way too small now. Those little guys I saw at the pet store were probably just babies.

I think you can put a clown in a 5 gallon tank, but I gotta say, water quality's gonna be a huge concern. And even with perfect water, clowns can get pretty stressed out.

As for the clown goby, I've got one in my 30 gallon tank and it's pretty chill, usually just hangs out on one side. Not a big swimmer at all. And from what I've heard, keeping two clown gobys in one tank, especially a small one like yours, might not be the best idea - unless you're talking about a yellow clown, but I'm not even sure about that.
