One of my bettas flares at me, also at the puffer in the adjacent tank - I'm not sure he's aware of what's on the receiving end. My other male, koral, has a different approach - he lures the ghost shrimp out by dropping food near their hideout, then chases them off with a flare. It's hilarious to watch, but interestingly, he never flares at me.

My son's red VT Alphie initially flared at us for the first week, but nowadays he's all about the excited fishy dance whenever we approach, or rather, whenever the Hikari pellet packet makes an appearance.

My betta Crawford is a real charmer - he'll swim right up to the side of the tank to see me, then gets all feisty with the guppies if they're in the way, flaring at them like they're intruding on our little moment. It's kinda sweet, really - I think he just wants to check in and say hi.

My Schuylkill's got a bit of an attitude problem - he flares at me the moment I approach his tank. Same guy who's always trying to leap out and snatch food from my hand when I'm feeding him. My two crowns are a different story though - Aidan's always coming to say hi, but Smoke's a shy one, only venturing near when I lift the lid for feeding. Silly fish, indeed.
