best discus tank mates for color

Post by UTESO »

I've got a 75-gallon tank with six Discus, all around 4 inches. Water's stable at 84°F, pH 6.8, and I do 30% changes twice a week. Looking for tank mates that'll pop with color but won't mess with their vibe. Any suggestions?

Cardinal Tetras are a solid pick. They're chill, stay small, and their red/blue contrast makes your Discus stand out. I keep 20 in my 90-gallon with similar params, 0 issues. Just avoid Neon Tetras, they're sketchy with higher temps.

Rummy Nose Tetras! Their red heads and silver bodies are fire, plus they school tight. Mine share a 120-gallon with Discus, temp at 86°F. They're hardy if you acclimate slow. Also, German Blue Rams if you want bottom dwellers with color.

Yep, Cardinals over Neons any day. Neons are like that one friend who can't handle the heat. Also, try Sterbai Corys—orange fins, black spots, and they'll clean up leftovers.

I've had luck with Apistogramma Cacatuoides. Their orange/yellow fins pop against Discus, and they're not pushy. Keep caves for them though. My pair shares a 55-gallon, sand substrate, and they ignore each other. Water's at 82°F, pH 7.0.

If you're gonna go big, Boesemani Rainbows. Their blue/yellow gradient is wild, but they need space. I've got five in a 125-gallon with Discus, temp at 83°F. Just watch feeding—they're faster than Discus, so scatter food wide.

Thanks for the ideas, everyone. Gonna start with Cardinals and maybe a pair of Rams. Appreciate the specifics on temps and tank sizes too.

Yo, don't sleep on Black Phantom Tetras. Their dark bodies make Discus colors pop, and they're low-key. My 75-gallon's got 'em with driftwood and Java Ferns, zero drama.

Harlequin Rasboras are underrated. That orange triangle on their sides? Chef's kiss. I've got 15 in my 60-gallon, temp at 85°F, and they school like they're in a music video.

Facts. Also, check out Congo Tetras if you want shimmer. Their scales catch light like disco balls, but they need a bigger tank—mine's 100-gallon, temp 82°F.
