Need to know the Discus Strain Name

Post by joystic »

I recently cross bred my discus pair after keeping them with other discus for months. The offspring have really unique patterns. Some of the babies have grown to adult size and I'm looking to sell them since I don't have enough space. Can anyone who's experienced with discus, or an expert, help me identify these beautiful but unusual fish? I'll upload pics one by one or all at once.

Your pics didn't come through, mate. Try reposting them so we can take a look at these unique discus fish you're trying to identify.

They're crosses. I see some with a bit of PB, others with Turk, and when you combine the two, it's Curipera. For your website, I'd suggest posting them as crosses from the parent pair, show a picture of the pair, then some of the offspring. You've done a great job raising these - they're really nice fish.

I'm with FishNe on this, the crosses have turned out great. Nicely done indeed.

Forrest, who supplies discus to a couple of our forum sponsors, told me breeders often label fish based on appearance, not actual breed. That makes sense to me. To me, they look like Blue Alenquer or Red Alenquer crosses.

I'd love to see the parents, they've clearly produced some unique offspring. The variety is impressive. I'd identify the second one as a Gold Melon, and the third as a Turk Pigeon - what are your thoughts, Cliff and wilde?

Re: Need to know the Discus Strain Name

In my honest opinion, we could label them as pigeon blood, peppered pigeon blood, or non pigeon blood with a blue base. Or, if you'd like, we could go with something a bit more personable - like Pete, Susie, Sandra, and Sam, or even Blake. On a more serious note, these fish are crosses, and as such, any name we give them is just that - a name. People have the right to label their fish as they see fit, but at the end of the day, it's really just about showing the parents and the offspring. That's the best way to give a true representation of what you have.
