Re: favorite tail types and color patterns?
There are so many beautiful bettas out there now. I'm really fond of the classic Cambodian betta - you know, the ones with a light body and those gorgeous light red fins. It's like they're the Siamese cat of the betta world, with that striking red point coloration. As for tails, I've always been a ...

Re: why is my coral turning brown?
Second this. My Zoas bleach if I go over 8 hours. Also, how's your flow? Too little can let detritus settle on them.

Re: why is my coral turning brown?
Sounds like your lighting might be off. How long you running the AI Prime each day? Also, what's your alk at? Brown usually means stress, could be light or params.
Yep, alk's huge here. Mine did the same when my alk dropped to 6. Check that and maybe cut the light cycle by an hour. Mine bounced ...

Re: Identifying a pelvicachromis teaniatus variant
If they're taeniatus, we're looking at two main types in my area - the red and green varieties.
If we're dealing with Pelvicachromis kribensis, as opposed to the hobby's pulcher, then it's tough to say - the fish seem too stressed for their identifying features to be visible.
I just read that ...

Re: Identifying a pelvicachromis teaniatus variant
I came across an article in TFH that mentioned even experts have a hard time identifying Pelvicachromis. Guess that's not much help.

Re: betta bloating issues after frozen bloodworm feedings
I think it's possible that your boy Pisces' belly is bloated due to gorging on the bloodworms, but there could be other factors at play as well.
To be honest, bloodworms aren't the healthiest food option, and I'd recommend limiting them to once a week. They can cause internal issues, and it's ...

Re: discussing our favorite books
My all-time favorite book is still Dr. William T. Innes' Exotic Aquarium Fishes. I picked it up back in the 1960s, and as a wide-eyed kid just starting out in the hobby, I was completely absorbed by it. The pronunciation guide was incredibly helpful, teaching me how to say those long scientific ...

Re: Exploring the world of caves
I've found these amazing coconut shells that make perfect caves. Cut them in half, add a couple of holes with a hole saw, and you've got these adorable little igloos. I'm pretty sure the organic aspect of coconut shells is beneficial for the water quality too.

Re: Evaluating the effectiveness of open tank hedges against jumpers
Don't ever underestimate the jumping prowess of any fish. My experience with Killifish, albeit limited, has left me in awe of their capabilities. A juvenile Fundulopanchax gardneri I once observed, made a remarkable ten-foot leap from a standing start - completely aerial, no less. What struck me was ...

Re: betta ate all the fry this time
I've had similar issues in the past, and what I found was that the water depth made a big difference. I think the males get stressed trying to catch the eggs and fry that fall to the bottom, especially if they're not free-swimming yet. When I kept the water around 4 inches deep, they seemed to have ...
