I've got a similar setup. Sand substrate, lots of plants. The snails don't bother me much, but I'll try cutting back on food like vyno9 suggested.

Looking at the pictures, I'm trying to figure out which part we're focusing on - the white blotch on the fish's head between its eyes, or those three small holes next to the nostril in the first picture.

My friend's got an african cichlid tank with this one fish, and it's got some kinda injury on its head, looks like it's open. Anybody know what's goin on with this guy?
