4 inches is about the max size, but honestly, they're best kept as a pair, groups can be a nightmare, especially when breeding, the smallest ones get killed off. I've had good luck selling extra fry on Gumtree, it's a good way to rehome them.

I've had them in a smaller tank before, a 2ft one, and they were fine, but I think that's because it was just them. If I'm honest, I do think they'd try to kill or harm your other community fish, they're very protective of their space. Angels might be alright, but they'd probably try to eat the fry ...

Hi Cathy, I've kept Malawi's with great success, your tank size is ideal for them. With cichlids, you'll want plenty of hiding spots to keep them happy and stress-free. I use a similar substrate to cichlid sand, which helps maintain a stable pH, so you should be alright on that front. For rocks ...

I agree with bark9er, those cichlids are gonna cause trouble. Dominant fish will likely stress or kill the others, I've seen it before.

I completely agree with discuslove, it sounds like your red zebra's got eggs in her mouth that'll soon be turning into fry. They usually stay at the egg stage for about three weeks, then move on to the fry stage for around a week before she lets them fend for themselves, although she might give them ...
