Re: the steel wool of the plant world
I've had my share of Marimo moss balls, and I'm inclined to agree with magnum man that many sold online might be just rolled-up hair algae. I've got a lingering issue in one of my tanks, where I kept them, and it's plagued with hair algae. I've got two identical 5-gallon tanks, same parameters, same ...

Re: Are my pygmy cichlids preparing to spawn?
One thing to keep an eye out for is if they start positioning themselves in a T shape with one fish across the nose of the other - that's a pretty strong indication of spawning behaviour. My own pygmy corys used to do this a lot, and they'd often leave eggs on plant leaves, which unfortunately the ...

Re: A softer spot for snails
I've got freshwater limpets in both my nanos, been trying to get rid of them for ages but I've thrown in the towel. I'm alright with them now, they do eat a bit of algae. Since adding nerites to each tank, the algae's decreased and the limpet population's taken a hit.

Re: Growing my baby dwarf tears (hc)
Hey, sorry for the delay. My tank's footprint is 4' x 16" - I'm thinking of setting up a little corner area for the Baby Dwarf Tears, sort of enclosed by some sterilized rocks.

Growing my baby dwarf tears (hc)
Considering the title, I'm interested in growing Baby Dwarf Tears in my tank. Here are a few key facts about my setup...

Re: Detecting nitrates in my tap water
I'm not a huge fan of using chemical filtration media in the tank filter, but I do think it's worth considering pre-filtering your water-change water overnight before doing a water change. I appreciate you're probably changing around 60 litres or so, but it could be worth the effort. You could get ...

Re: guide to setting up a planted tank
I've just shared my own experience with using Flourish Excel, not recommended it to anyone else. My tank's doing great, fish, shrimps, plants, and bacteria all thriving. Zero ammonia and nitrites, nitrates barely detectable. I wish the OP all the best with their planted tank setup.

Re: guide to setting up a planted tank
I use Seachem Flourish Excel, but I don't follow the recommended daily dosage - I stick to two or three times a week and it seems to work for me. I trust Seachem products, but I know some people have concerns about gluteflakedehyde-based ferts, like potential plant die-back. I've been lucky so far ...

Re: guide to setting up a planted tank
I'm no plant expert, but after 11 years away from the hobby, I've done some research to get back into it. I used to have live plants, but I wasn't very successful and ended up buying new ones every weekend. This time around, I've found out that there are basically two types of plants: root feeders ...
