Re: rams with gold balloon and angle
The bubble eye goldfish has a genetic mutation that occurred naturally, but people have selectively bred this mutation to create the big bubble eye strain. It's a natural mutation, but not ideal for the fish, as it causes swimming difficulties, eye problems, and the bubbles can pop and get infected ...

Re: rams with gold balloon and angle
While Glofish aren't perfect, they at least remain normal in shape - it's more about added coloured genes rather than physical deformities. The main issue with balloon fish is the shortened body and resulting internal problems, making them a less desirable choice compared to Glofish.

Re: rams with gold balloon and angle
I'd advise against buying those golden balloon body rams, to be honest. They're genetically deformed and prone to internal issues due to their stunted growth. It's a shame, really - these fish are bred to look unique, but they're actually pretty low quality.

Re: Diagnosing diseases
I'm not convinced it's hole in the head disease, the symptoms don't quite add up. It's possible you're dealing with the start of an ulcer, so I'd recommend trying a salt treatment for a couple of weeks - a good starting point would be 2 heaped tablespoons per 20 litres. If you don't see any ...

Re: observations of humbugs and chromis
It really comes down to several key factors - tank size, the amount of rockwork and hiding places, the number of each species you plan to keep, and the order in which you introduce them.
In a larger tank, say 4x2x2ft, with plenty of rock and nooks for the fish to hide, you might be able to get away ...

Re: dealing with algae on fish
The white/grey film on your sunnygold cichlid appears to be excess mucous, and considering the clamped fins, I'd say it's likely a protozoan infection, although poor water quality can't be ruled out.

Try resizing the pics on your computer with an image editing software, should do the trick. Alternatively, you can also upload them to a free image hosting site, then just copy and paste the link here.

Re: dealing with algae on fish
Would be great if you could share a photo of the affected fish.
Algae growth on fish is unusual, mainly because their natural mucus coating prevents algae from taking hold, and they regularly shed this mucus.

Re: keeping malawi cichlids
I'm not familiar with the exact dimensions of a 123 litre tank. Typically, most Mbuna and zebra cichlids require a tank that's at least 4 foot long to thrive.

Re: keeping malawi cichlids
The yellow one appears to be a sunnygold cichlid, Labidochromis caeruleus, known for being quite peaceful. In contrast, the blue fish seems to be a blue zebra cichlid, Maylandia callainos, which tends to become aggressive as it matures. The marble/mottled fish resembles an OB zebra cichlid ...
