A new betta

Just got back from Canton and found the perfect replacement for Fred. My wife fell in love with this guy and I think he's gonna be a great fit for our home. He's a fluxeon scale plakat, so I'm thinking Drogon would be a great name - she's a huge GOT fan. Alternatively, Wasabi could work since we ...

Re: Elvis settles into his own private village

That's one stunning tank - the combination of healthy, thriving plants and a well-designed scape is just perfect. Your photography skills aren't too shabby either. Elvis is one lucky betta to have such a beautiful home. Now, if only you could work your magic on my tanks...

Re: identifying my betta fish

You're a genius, man. I'm just gonna say it - that's one hilarious intro for a fish ID thread.

Re: identifying my betta fish

Your betta is a betta splendens, by the way. The coloring on his head might be normal, considering these fish can have pretty varied coloration. I'd recommend doing a water change and giving him a few weeks to settle in - he might color up more after that. I'm no betta expert, but I'm sure some of ...

Re: identifying my betta fish

I think he might be a halfmoon, though I'm more familiar with plakat and wild types myself, so I wouldn't stake my claim on it - he's definitely a stunner either way.

Re: Comparing hornwort and coontail growth rates

I've been pleasantly surprised with my hornwort - it's thriving despite my notorious brown thumb. I've even managed to keep it alive, unlike my ill-fated duckweed. The growth is staggering, with these photos taken just 4 days apart. I've heard hornwort can take over a tank quickly, but this is on ...

Re: Comparing hornwort and coontail growth rates

@bigtop I can imagine how frustrating that must've been for you and the poor guppy. I've been worried about something like that happening in my tank too. Our betta seems to prefer the hornwort over the artificial plants we had before, which is a relief since I was more concerned about those.

I've ...

Re: Comparing hornwort and coontail growth rates

That's a relief to hear. I'm not a huge fan of the way it looks, but I'm aiming for a jungle tank vibe with live plants. I think I'll need to pick up a terrac pot or two for the right side, though. Problem is, nobody local has any in stock except this one thrift store that's asking an outrageous $4 ...

Comparing hornwort and coontail growth rates

I'm still in shock, my brown thumb is infamous for killing even the hardiest aquarium plants - I mean, I've managed to kill duckweed, for crying out loud. But somehow, I've managed to keep my hornwort alive and thriving. I've taken these pics just 4 days apart, and the growth is insane - we're ...
