That's a great point. I use Seachem root tabs in my sand substrate and my Amazon Swords are thriving.

Black sand does look sharp, but it can show debris more easily. If you go that route, be ready to vacuum it often.

Koi and marbled bettas are wild, they change up their look so much every few months, it's really pretty cool.

I actually started a breeding project for dwarf bettas, managed to get two generations going but sadly couldn't progress to a third.
