Banana leaves can work too, but they break down faster. If you're near an Asian market, they're dirt cheap. Just make sure they're pesticide-free. My 15-gallon's got a mix of banana and oak, and the water's stayed stable.

I've been using eco-complete. It's got all the nutrients, and it's super easy to work with. My bettas are in a 5-gallon and a 10-gallon, both with eco-complete and low-tech plants. No complaints so far.

I'm leaning towards trying out either amano or ghost shrimp with my betta. Thinking of getting 2 or 3 and observing how he interacts with them... once I've tackled the hydra issue I'm dealing with.
