Re: returning to the african community
I've had my fair share of mbuna tanks and I've come to accept that losses are just part of the game. You can try to minimize them, but they're gonna happen. Overcrowding definitely helps to some extent, and I've also found that having a higher female-to-male ratio can make a difference. In my tank ...

Re: returning to the african community
I've been keeping mbuna for a bit over a year, and I have to admit, all the reading I did beforehand almost scared me off due to their notorious aggression. I decided to take the plunge, though, and started with all juveniles. Luckily, I haven't experienced any prolonged aggression - in fact, it's ...

Re: returning to the african community
I had a great experience with yellow labs and rustys, they coexisted peacefully for years with only occasional chasing. In my opinion, they're the only mbuna species worth keeping, the rest just can't compare. I've tried many others, but they all seemed to be in a constant state of aggression ...

Re: returning to the african community
Honestly, I've never been a fan of keeping mbunas due to their inherent aggression. In my experience, removing the dominant male doesn't solve the problem - it just creates a power vacuum. Another male inevitably steps up to take its place. Before you know it, you're left with a single dominant ...

returning to the african community
Here goes, my third attempt at creating a thriving mbuna community. I'm drawn to them despite past disappointments - I love the concept of slightly overstocking to minimize aggression, their vibrant colors, and energetic nature. However, as soon as the tank turns into a battleground, I lose ...

Re: My favourite rift lake cichlid species
I'm loving the setup you've got for your yellows, always been a fan of them myself. The limestone substrate and rainwater supply seems to be working wonders. That green algae covering the tank looks amazing, I'm sure the fish are making the most of it. What's the tank size, if you don't mind me ...

Re: My favourite rift lake cichlid species
I've got a soft spot for yellow labs - gorgeous, and they're not as aggressive as some of the other mbuna I've kept.

Re: A guide to fish tanks for busy professionals
I essentially figured out that I don't need automation in my tanks. I've had a lot of tanks for a long time, 20 of them actually, and I've gotten into a routine. There are two times I check on them, when I feed and during weekly maintenance. That's when I make sure everything is okay, the obvious ...

Re: A guide to fish tanks for busy professionals
Fishkeeping is a hobby that demands time and attention - it's not just about having a pretty display. I've found ways to make maintenance easier, like ditching the buckets for a hose, but that's about it. There are some exceptions, of course - people with crazy schedules or those who travel a lot ...
