Re: Celebrating a special moment
Considering your fondness for labyrinth fish, a group of gouramis might be an interesting option to explore. I've had experience with pearl gouramis, but given the dimensions of your tank, I think honey gouramis could be a better fit. As for wild betta species, I don't have any personal experience ...

Re: Alternative stocking options for a 20-gallon tall aquarium
Lowering the water level might not be enough to keep hatchetfish from jumping out, considering their reputation as notorious jumpers. Not having a lid could still be a problem, even with a couple inches less water.

Re: Alternative stocking options for a 20-gallon tall aquarium
Considering the unique tank setup you're planning, peacock gudgeons might be an interesting choice. However, I'd like to know more about their compatibility with apistogrammas, specifically in a 20-gallon tank with soft water and the decorations you've described. Would the peacock gudgeons be too ...

Re: Alternative stocking options for a 20-gallon tall aquarium
I'm also considering keeping just a single male apistogramma as the focal point, and then filling out the rest of the tank with some schooling fish.

Re: Alternative stocking options for a 20-gallon tall aquarium
I've got a pretty standard 20 gallon tall setup planned - 24 inches long, 12 inches wide. The equipment and decor will likely include two sponge filters, one on either side, Carib Sea super natural sand for the substrate, and some live plants like Java fern, anubias, and pothos. I'll also add some ...

Alternative stocking options for a 20-gallon tall aquarium
Just set up three new aquariums - two 20-gallon tall ones and a ten-gallon. Got rid of some old ones that weren't doing what I wanted them to. The ten-gallon is for my vampire crabs, and I'm planning to put a giant betta in one of the 20s. Now I need to figure out what to do with the other 20-gallon ...

Re: choosing the right aquarium heater for discus
I've had a heater malfunction in the past, it was a nightmare. The temperature skyrocketed to 92 degrees, I was lucky to catch it in time and replace the heater before I lost all my fish. Having two heaters is definitely a safer option, especially with sensitive fish like discus. I'd recommend ...

feeling like something is missing
I've got a tiny 70lt tank I'm turning into a jungle setup. The lighting is pretty low, same tank that was featured in this month's PFK magazine, so I'm sticking to easy-to-care-for plants that'll thrive with just a weekly dose of liquid ferts.
As it stands now, I feel like something's missing. I'm ...
