Re: Evaluating the effectiveness of open tank hedges against jumpers

I think it ultimately comes down to personal preference - every fish is capable of jumping at some point, and having an open-top tank for aesthetic reasons means you're taking on that risk. I've had my fair share of fish jumping out, including zebra plecos that I've found dead on the floor after ...

Re: how much substrate to buy?

The depth of substrate you'll need largely depends on the plants you plan to keep. I've got a 40g tank with the same base dimensions as yours, and I've found that about 1.5 inches of play sand works well when spread evenly. Of course, you can adjust the depth in different areas - I've got more ...

Crypts are a great choice, they don't grow out of control and have a nice appearance. This is based on about 2 years of growth, they're a good option to consider.

Re: Choosing the best aquarium filter: styles, types, and what works

basically, I'm thinking of a 2 intake sump design, but I'm gonna do it my way - double intakes on both, with backup overflows for drainage. I mean, if one intake gets plugged, I've got a 2nd one, and both intakes have backup overflows, just in case. I can just put a sump under the main tank and pipe ...

Re: Keeping hill stream loach with ram cichlids

My tank's at 28C, community setup with a built-in sump, doing about 100gph, 2x rotation. Got a bunch of fish, including Cories, a few Plecos - juveniles and 2 adult L144. Also have 4 juvenile and 2 male, 1 female adult L046. Then there's the Loaches - 2 hillstream, 2 chain. I've got 2 pea puffers ...

Re: disastrous vacation experiences: what went wrong?

I've learned the hard way, from relying on others in my line of work, that when it comes to something you truly care about, it's best not to trust anyone else with it. When you're leaving for an extended period, like your upcoming trip in August, consider investing in an auto-feeder to take the ...
