Re: can discus thrive in hard water?
Thanks for the input, everyone. Sounds like it's possible but risky. I'll try a 50/50 RO mix and monitor their behavior. Appreciate the specifics on setups!

can discus thrive in hard water?
I've heard conflicting opinions on whether discus can handle hard water. My tap water is around 300 ppm, pH 7.8, and I'm wondering if it's worth trying to adjust it or if they'll adapt. Tank is 75 gallons, planted with driftwood, sand substrate, and a Fluval FX4. Temp stays at 84°F. Anyone have ...

Re: discus aggression during feeding
Aggression during feeding is often a dominance thing. The bigger discus will bully the smaller ones. You might wanna separate the aggressive ones during feeding. My tank is 60 gallons, 4 discus, and I use a canister filter. Temp at 83F, water changes twice a week.

Re: discus breeding water parameters
How old are your Discus? Younger pairs might take longer to spawn. Mine didn't start till they were 18 months old. Tank's a 50g, temp 85°F, pH 6.5, TDS 150. I use a mix of RO and tap, with a KH of 2. Sponge filter only, and I feed a mix of beef heart, flakes, and freeze-dried tubifex. Lighting's on ...

Re: Betta fish questions
If he's still not eating, consider a garlic soak. Some folks swear it stimulates their appetite. Just a tiny bit of garlic juice on the food.

Re: Betta fish questions
How long has it been since you got him? Sometimes they need a few days to settle in before they start eating. Also, check the temp, Bettas prefer it around 78-80F.

Re: Lighting and surface agitation questions
Thanks for the help, everyone. I really appreciate the advice. It seems like surface agitation is pretty flexible as long as there's some movement, so I'll probably experiment with my wavemaker to find the right balance for my discus. I've also taken ...

Lighting and surface agitation questions
I'm currently planning for discus and I'd love some input.
For surface agitation and gas exchange, do you guys prefer airstones or wavemakers? Is one better suited for discus than the other?
I've got a Current LED light fixture, so I'm curious - what's the ideal mix of white and blue to bring out ...
