Re: Hammer corals making a comeback
Just had a similar thing happen to me, lost a hammer to a salinity spike and I'm definitely leaving the skeleton in there now. Got back from a 3-day trip and my tank was down 2 gallons, no top-off with RODI... went from 1.026 to 1.038 in my small 20g, not good. Guess I'll take a cue from you, not ...

Re: Hammer corals making a comeback
Got any pics of this? I'm curious now. Had a similar experience with an SPS skeleton on some live rock I brought back from the Gulf of Mexico when I lived in Florida. Took a month or two in my tank for me to notice some polyps starting to grow from the skeleton, but I've never seen it happen with a ...

Re: Understanding coral biology
Your second and flintix9t pics are actually single animal corals, whereas the others appear to be colonies, and you're correct in assuming each 'flower' is a single animal within the colony.
A general Google search for info on coral colonies should yield plenty of useful information.

Re: Identifying hammer and zoa corals
For the hammer, if you can get a pic when the lights are out and it's closed or not as expanded, that'll give you a better idea if it's a wall or branching hammer.
As for the zoas, I'm stumped - I got a small frag with 4-6 polyps and it's grown like crazy, now it's about the same size as your ...

Re: Struggling to raise octospawn.
corals can be pretty resilient, i think. they're used to dealing with being exposed to air and direct sunlight in shallow water reefs from tides. some even handle temp fluctuations from being in tidal pools that heat up during the day.

Acan frag polyps extending: what's the cause and how to encourage it
I've had my Acans for about a year now, and I've noticed something weird lately. The other day, after feeding, the polyps started extending upwards instead of just inflating and putting out their tentacles. The only thing that's changed in the tank is that we had a big salinity swing when I was away ...
