Floating plants are a good idea, but they'll compete for light and nutrients. Just keep that in mind if you go that route.

Re: why are my plants not spreading?
Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try upping the Flourish and maybe add some Excel. The flow is decent, I've got a HOB filter creating some movement. Should I adjust the light duration too?
Light duration is fine at 8 hours, but if you're adding Excel, start with half the recommended dose to ...

Re: why are my plants not spreading?
Java Fern and Anubias are slow growers, especially if they're not getting enough nutrients. Flourish is a micronutrient supplement, but they might need more macronutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Have you checked your phosphate levels? Also, how's your flow? These plants prefer a ...

Java Moss needs flow. If it's stagnant, it rots. Try placing it near your filter outlet.

Honestly, I'm no expert, but to me, it sounds like she might be bloated or something.
I'm curious about the tankmates - what type of loach and algae eater are they? Generally, loaches are schooling fish and need to be in a group of at least 5. Not sure about algae eaters though, can you tell me ...

Re: Growing plants emersed: tips and advice
Growing aquatic plants is pretty straightforward. Most aquarium plants are essentially marsh plants, so you can treat them similarly to regular garden plants. I've had success using 20cm plastic pots filled with standard potting mix, and then placing those pots in larger trays - usually around 25 ...

Growing plants emersed: tips and advice
Trying my hand at growing emersed plants to recoup some costs on these pricey plants. I've got a monte carlo container going already and I'm planning to start a plant bin with buce and some other plants from my tanks.
I'm going with a plastic container and 1 inch of fluval stratum to start. I've ...

Re: Considering a return to the hobby
Welcome back to me too, I guess. Just got back into the swing of things and I see you're thinking of rejoining the aquarium world. Good on you, hope it all works out.
PS. Congrats on the McDonald's gig, I'm sure you'll have some wild stories to share from the grill.

Lowering ph without tannins: alternative methods
I'm running a 40-gallon tank with a mix of low to neutral pH fish, and it's pretty heavily planted. The issue is my tap water pH is around 7.5, but I've got seiryu stone in there, which drives up both pH and kH. To manage this, I've been relying on Indian almond leaves, but the tannins are really ...

Raising ram cichlid fry in a community tank
Just got my first batch of eggs from my Bolivian rams in a month and I'm pretty stoked. They vanished a couple days ago, but I just found the wrigglers today. I know the survival rate might not be great, but I'm looking for ways to maximize it without removing any fish.
