Same vibe here. My Apistos bred in tannin soup last year, so I stopped fussing. Boiling's overrated unless you're impatient or your wood's leaking weird gunk. Just watch for fungus, that's the real headache.

Re: Wood-related tank problems

Yep, Mopani's the worst for this. I gave up and boiled mine for like, six hours straight. Still tinted the water but way less sketchy. If you're gonna try boiling, do it outside unless you wanna stink up your kitchen. Also, your fish probably dig the tannins, so no rush unless it's bugging you.

Re: discus tank setup for shy fish

Honestly, some Discus are just drama queens. Give 'em time, keep the water pristine, and they'll get over it. Or they won't. Fish, right?

Re: Discus water hardness explained

RO water's a scam unless you're trying to breed show-quality fish. Your setup sounds solid, mate. Maybe bump up feeding? My crew gets six small meals a day. Also, what's your stock like? Overcrowding can mess with growth rates. I keep six in a 90-gallon with cardinal tetras and rams.

Re: I fed hormones to my fish. Outcome is amazing.

Well said John, I completely agree with your approach to experimenting on fish as long as they're not being sold or distributed. Your example of testing the effects of 100% RO water on breeding pairs is a great illustration of how experiments can ...

I've gotta say, that's one heck of a transformation. But let's be real, messing with hormones can have some pretty serious consequences - we're talking organ failure, blindness, the works.

Re: I’m devastated and miss them already

Your discus are stunning, I can feel the pain you're going through. I had to rehome mine years ago due to unexpected events - it was tough. IT SUCKS, I still miss the daily routine, the thrill of watching them thrive. Hopefully someday I'll set up another ...

Seachem Stability is basically the anaerobic bacteria that convert the ammonia to nitrite, nitrite to nitrate, and help consume the nitrate. Even with daily water changes it is cheap insurance against losing fish

I think you're getting your bacteria mixed up. I ...

Re: fish that lose their charm as they mature

It's not the plecos' fault they end up in the wrong tanks, it's the greedy retailers selling them to clueless customers. I'm sure plenty of mags, like PFK, have warned us about these giants, yet people still bring them home.

My mate's got a couple of bristlenose and he's smitten. I, on the other ...
