Smart move. You can always add plants later if you want. Focus on their growth first.

Bare bottom is way easier to maintain, especially with juveniles. You gotta keep the water pristine for them to grow well. I've got a 90-gallon bare bottom with a sump, and my Discus are thriving. A friend suggested it could've been something on the Sprig, maybe gill flukes, but I'm not convinced since there were no symptoms beforehand.

I had a bit of a disaster on Wednesday - one of my discus breeding pairs was leaking, so I had to act fast to save them.
