Nitrates are part of the nitrogen cycle. Fish waste breaks down into ammonia, then nitrites, then nitrates. Plants use nitrates as food. Too much can harm fish, too little starves plants.

What kinda plants do you guys recommend with Danios? I've got some Java Fern but wanna add more.

Cloudiness happens with any new substrate. Just crank up the filter and add some Seachem Clarity. It'll clear in a day or two. My Corys love digging in play sand, way better than gravel.
