Play sand can work, but you gotta rinse it like crazy. I used it in my 75 gallon and had zero issues after rinsing. Just make sure it's silica based, not calcium. Also, keep an eye on your nitrates at first, it can sometimes leach stuff.

Good call. Just remember, Apistos are more work but more rewarding. If you're up for the challenge, go for it. Otherwise, the Pearl Gourami is a safer bet.

German Blue Rams are a solid choice. They're colorful, stay small, and won't bother tankmates. Just keep the water warm, around 82°F, and soft. They're picky about water quality though, so keep up with weekly changes.
