Re: Determining the sex of my convict cichlid

Convict cichlids are pretty straightforward to identify. Females have a red patch in their anal fin area - not a lot, just a small spot, but males never have it. Typically, females are smaller than males, but don't let that fool you - they've got a feisty side, especially if the male's not pulling ...

I'm fairly certain it's a convict, don't really know what else it could be.

Re: Concerns about black water tank maintenance

Honestly, unless you're working with wild-caught Apistogramma cichlids, there's no real need to replicate black water conditions. Soft, neutral to slightly acidic water should do the trick – we're talking GH below 150ppm and a pH between 6.5-7.4.

Concerns about black water tank maintenance

I've been considering setting up a tank for apistogrammas and I'm really drawn to using indian almond leaves and bark for their water-softening properties. My main concern is with water changes - I'm worried that if I replace a significant amount of water, the sudden change in tannin levels could ...

Re: explaining ei fert adjustments

The concept behind EI is that adjustments aren't necessary. The accuracy of testing methods is questionable, and nutrient levels can fluctuate significantly. Even your water supply's chemistry varies with the seasons and rainfall.

EI proponents argue that having too much of a particular nutrient ...
