Pro tip: get a heater guard if you've got a curious betta. Mine kept trying to sit on the dang thing. Not exactly a warm rock, buddy.

For a 5-gallon, I'd go with a small adjustable heater. Presets can be sketchy, especially if your room temp fluctuates. I've had good luck with the 50W Aqueon Pro, keeps my tank at 78°F steady.

Could be copepods, they're beneficial for the tank and a natural food source for the fish.
