Re: why is discus tank always murky?
I'd second the UV sterilizer idea. Worked wonders for me. Also, maybe add some purigen to your filter. That stuff's magic for clearing up water.

Re: Xenia pulsing or not, is it normal?
Thanks for the tips. Flow's the same, salinity's at 1.025, temp's steady. No new fish. I'll keep an eye on them.

Xenia pulsing or not, is it normal?
My Xenia stopped pulsing a few days ago. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Tank is a 40 gallon with LED lighting, running for about a year. Anyone else had this happen? They were fine last week.

Re: best filter for a discus aquarium
Good call, Foldo. Just remember to rinse the media in tank water during changes, not tap. Chlorine'll wreck your bacteria. My Discus started coloring up nicely after I switched to that routine.

Re: best filter for a discus aquarium
I've been running a Fluval 407 on my 90 gallon Discus tank for a year now, and it's been solid. The flow is adjustable, so you can dial it down if they seem stressed. Just make sure to stuff it with extra bio media, like Seachem Matrix, to handle their waste. My crew's chill with it, no weird vibes.

Re: discus tank lighting preferences
Lighting's tricky with these guys. I'd avoid anything above 6500K. My 90 gallon has a Nicrew ClassicLED, set to 6 hours midday. Water's at 84°F, pH 6.8, and they're paired with Cardinals. The key is consistency, no sudden changes.
Spot on. I'd add that tannins from the driftwood help too. My ...

Re: discus tank lighting preferences
Yep, too much light freaks 'em out. I run mine at 50% max, 8 hours a day. Tank's got sand substrate, a few Java Ferns, and a sponge filter. They're way less skittish now.
Same here. I use a Finnex Planted+ 24/7 but keep it on the low setting. My Discus are in a 55 with CO2 and Amazon swords ...

Thanks Liz, I really appreciate the detailed explanation. Your system looks incredibly complex, I must admit. The original thread I had referenced was about installing a drip system and overflow for continuous water change, but I think your approach is more suitable for your ...
