What's the tank size in gallons, and what kind of betta are you thinking of? If you want a community tank with betas, I'd say you need at least a 10-gallon tank. Honestly, 20 gallons is way better for a community setup. You could consider adding some peaceful, schooling fish like ember tetras, chili ...

I'm curious to know more about Pence's current condition. Are his scales looking a bit off, like they're sticking out in all directions? Is he appearing bloated at all? I'd love to see some pictures of him if you have any. Could you also share some info about your tank and water parameters?

I recall mollies requiring hard water, whereas cichlids need an even higher pH, which is something to consider, given the mix of fish in my tank.

I'm starting to think those fish didn't just die off from a minor issue. Nitrites and ammonia, they don't just magically disappear within a few hours. It's likely they were suffering from ammonia poisoning, and that's what ultimately took them out.
