Re: why discus nip at plants?
Check your water hardness too. Soft water can make discus more prone to nipping. Mine stopped when I bumped up the GH a bit. What's your current hardness? Also, how often are you doing water changes?
That's a good point. I keep my GH around 6-8 dGH, and they've been fine. How's your KH ...

Re: How to acclimate a new Betta to the tank
Thanks, everyone! Gonna try the drip method this time. My last betta seemed off for days, probably 'cause I skipped that step.

How to acclimate a new Betta to the tank
Just got a new betta and wanna make sure I'm doing this right. I've got a 5-gallon tank with a sponge filter, heater set to 78, and some live plants. How long should I float the bag before adding them in?

coral tank cycling tips
Just set up a new 40-gallon tank and added live rock. How long should I wait before adding my first coral? I'm using a protein skimmer and keeping salinity at 1.025. Temp is steady at 78F.

Re: bare bottom vs planted discus tank
That sounds like a good plan, Lexat. Just remember to keep the water clean and stable. Your Discus will thank you for it.

Re: bare bottom vs planted discus tank
I love planted tanks for Discus! They look so much nicer and the fish seem happier. I've got a 55-gallon with Amazon swords, Java fern, and driftwood. My Discus are adults now, and they love hiding in the plants. Just be ready to trim and clean more often. I use a canister filter and do 30% water ...

Re: new substrate for my 75-gallon planted tank
I'm leaning towards moving them all out while I switch substrates, it seems like the safest option. Since I don't have a Petco nearby, I'm looking for a good alternative. You mentioned using Petco sand, but was that your top choice or just the most convenient option? There are so many brands out ...

Re: new substrate for my 75-gallon planted tank
Your setup looks amazing, bigtop. I think I'm leaning towards sand now. You mentioned you got the sand from Petco, but I only have PetSmart nearby and they don't carry it. I'll have to look into ordering online instead.

Re: new substrate for my 75-gallon planted tank
I'm currently running with two Gouramis, a couple danios, and two rainbows, plus my lone pleco. I plan to beef up the shoals, but I want to tackle the substrate first. I've heard mixed reviews about Eco-complete - supposedly it's a bit harsh on the pleco's belly and a pain to plant in due to its ...
