I just do more frequent water changes with cooler water. Not a fix, but it helps in a pinch.

I've heard of people using baking soda paste to scrub residue. Has anyone tried that?

I've had good luck with Amazon Swords in my Tetra tank. They grow pretty big, so make sure you've got space. Mine are in a 30 gallon with sand substrate and root tabs. The Tetras seem to enjoy swimming through the leaves.
