Re: how to Care for moss balls
Moss balls can turn brown if they're not getting enough light or if the water quality's off. What's your nitrate level? Also, do you ever roll them to keep their shape?

Re: Aquarium lighting concerns
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll look into upgrading my light. Right now, I'm running it for about 10 hours a day, but maybe that's too much.

Aquarium lighting concerns
I've been running a 20 gallon planted tank for about six months now, and my plants just aren't thriving. I'm using a basic LED light that came with the tank, but I'm not sure if it's enough. Has anyone else had this issue? My Anubias and Java Fern are barely growing, and the leaves look pale.

Re: identifying my new peacocks
I'm guessing these are sub-adults, but I could be wrong. Pic 2 looks like Aulonocara nyassae to me, and pic 4 seems like Aulonocara baenschi. Honestly, I'm not super familiar with Malawi cichlids, so take my ID's for what they're worth.
No juveniles here, they're around 2-2.5 inches. Piccly 3 ...

identifying my new peacocks
Got 5 of 'em, including picclys. Pointed fins, so I'm guessing all males.

Re: Has my cichlid lost her eggs?
It's likely that she swallowed the eggs, which isn't uncommon with new mothers or those that were raised artificially after being stripped of their eggs as juveniles. Rearing cichlids by their parents is crucial for them to develop good parenting skills - when we intervene and take eggs from the ...

Has my cichlid lost her eggs?
I just witnessed the most incredible thing this morning - my female and male peacock cichlid spawning. The male was shaking over the eggs, and the female would pick them up, her mouth completely full. I checked on her a couple of hours later and her mouth was empty, no more bulge. I'm really ...

Re: keeping african cichlids with rainbow fish?
You're right to recheck the GH, 59mg/l is way too soft for Rift Lake cichlids and most rainbowfish - they need a GH of over 300ppm. Your pH of 7.8 is perfect for rainbowfish and peacock cichlids from Lake Malawi, but the GH needs to be higher, around 300-350ppm.

Re: keeping african cichlids with rainbow fish?
I'm curious, what type of cichlids were you thinking of adding to your tank? Also, which specific rainbowfish were you planning to get, aside from the two you already have?
Could you also provide the dimensions of your 75-gallon tank - length, width, and height?
Regarding your water parameters ...

keeping african cichlids with rainbow fish?
I'm setting up a new 75 gallon tank and I've got 2 rainbow fish that need to go in. Planning to add a few more, but I'm also thinking of getting some cichlids that look pretty cool. Can I mix them with the rainbows?
