best discus tank filter media

What's the best filter media for a Discus tank? I've got a 75 gallon with 6 adults, sand substrate, and a Fluval FX6. Been using ceramic rings and sponge but wanna know if there's something better. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, nitrates around 10 ppm. Temp's at 84F, weekly 50% water ...

Re: discus fry tank water changes

Aging water is clutch. I keep a 30 gallon brute can with a heater and air stone for my change water. Flow-wise, sponge filters are perfect, but if you've got a HOB, baffle it with some filter floss. Oh, and don't forget to check your beef heart mix. If it's too chunky, the tiny fry might not be ...

Re: discus fry tank water changes

Yep, gotta agree with the daily changes. I do 80% daily in my fry tank, and they're growing like weeds. Also, what's your lighting schedule? Too much light can stress 'em out. I keep mine on for 6 hours max. And yeah, brine shrimp is a game changer. They're like candy for discus.

Re: why do discus flare their gills?

Yep, it's usually just them being drama queens. My crew flares like they're in a WWE match, especially after I rearrange the tank. As long as they're not gasping at the surface or hiding, it's probably normal. What's your feeding schedule like?

Re: nitrate levels for coral health

Tagword, you running any bio pellets or vodka dosing? Those can crash nitrates too fast. Lost a colony once from 15 ppm to 0 in a week. Not pretty.

Re: nitrate levels for coral health

My Acros thrive at 2-3 ppm, but it's a balancing act. If you're running carbon, check that too. Old media can leach junk back into the water. I swap mine every 3 weeks like clockwork.

Re: my discus has a bloated belly

Yo, SunKnot, how old is your discus? Juveniles can bloat easier than adults. If it's a young one, might just be a phase. Keep an eye on it, but don't stress too much yet.
