getting the best plant advice
Considering my tank's setup - bare-bottom discus tank, no fertilisers, and no liquid/injected CO2 - I'm on the hunt for some potted aquarium plants that'll thrive. The Aquasky 990mm is my lighting system of choice. I've already tried Valis, but unfortunately, it didn't make the cut in my aquarium ...

Re: disinfecting creeping jenny plants
I came across a blog post by Bruce Plant that provides instructions on bleach dipping for aquatic plants. I'm still in the process of researching this topic and haven't had a chance to verify the information. I'm trying to avoid introducing any unwanted critters into my tank, so I'm looking for ...

Re: disinfecting creeping jenny plants
I'll try to answer your question - you wouldn't be using the plant if you didn't know about it. I've never been a fan of disinfecting or bleaching plants, it just seems unnecessary. You're not going to get snails from a terrestrial plant, and anything that might be on the plant can be washed off ...

Re: disinfecting creeping jenny plants
I'm more worried about parasites like gill and body flukes that could decimate my entire stock if they're on the plant. I've no experience with this reverse respiration method, so I'd rather stick with what I know - bleach treatment. However, I'm unsure of the correct dosage to use.

disinfecting creeping jenny plants
I've recently picked up some creeping jenny for my Koi pond and, as usual, I give my plants a disinfecting before adding them to the water.
Normally, I'd use Blagdon Pond Disinfectant - 25ml in 10 litres of water, which I assumed was a bleach-based product. However, these disinfectants have ...

Re: basic care for vallisneria
Mine grows until it's floating on the surface then turns to mush. I'm thinking maybe I need to trim it back before it reaches the surface, any thoughts on that?
I've found that when my Vallisneria reaches the surface, it's best to let it continue growing horizontally, but be aware that food ...

Re: basic care for vallisneria
I recall a mate's tank with a breeding pair of Discus, and Vallisneria Spiflakeus was the only plant thriving in there. The Discus loved it, and they successfully raised a bunch of young. It was a warm, soft-water setup, which seemed to work well for the V. Spiflakeus.
I do around a third to 40 ...

Re: basic care for vallisneria
I've found my Vallisneria does surprisingly well without a substrate, just sitting on top of bogwood or ceramic pots. It's grown up to 120cm in these conditions, which I'm pretty happy with.

basic care for vallisneria
I've got Vallisneria in my aquarium and I'm mindful of the conditions that can cause it to struggle. Temperatures above 29 degrees C and certain additives like liquid CO2 products can be detrimental.
