Re: Planning a fish relocation

Two hours isn't too bad. I'd recommend using a Styrofoam box for the bags—it's cheap and insulates well. Also, keep the tank lights off for a day after the move to let everyone chill. How many fish total?

Re: how to prevent algae in Betta tanks

What's your nitrate level? High nitrates often feed algae. Test your water and if it's above 20 ppm, more frequent water changes might cut it. Also, scrub the glass during changes to remove buildup.

Re: Growing aquarium plants in outdoor environments

Plants are still alive but not exactly thriving. Roots keep falling off then growing back. Did some research, seems like adding an air pump could do the trick. I'm half-tempted to throw a sponge filter in there and cycle it like one of my aquariums - that's basically all I'm missing, air. My plants ...

Re: Growing aquarium plants in outdoor environments

Two weeks ago, summer clothes were the norm, but last week's nighttime temps have been around zero. We've had mornings with a thin layer of snow, which the sun quickly melts, but those low night temps aren't ideal for tropical plants. British weather indeed.

I know it's crazy, hopefully it warms up ...

Re: Growing aquarium plants in outdoor environments

That greenhouse setup won't provide much insulation for the plants, and installing a heater would be impractical. With the current cold north east winds and snow, the plants will likely experience significant temperature drops, especially at night, which isn't ideal for tropical plants. I'm ...

Re: Growing aquarium plants in outdoor environments

I'd say you're on the right track as long as your plants get plenty of sunlight and the tubs are warm enough - either with a heater or if you live in a sunny area.

Do you add any fertilizers to the water?

Your setup in the greenhouse sounds like a great idea, by the way.

Yeah I add ...

Growing aquarium plants in outdoor environments

Just curious if anyone's had success with aquarium plants outside.
I'm currently growing some in a greenhouse, in tubs of water.
Would love to hear any advice - it's my first time trying this.
As I usually grow all my plants in my aquarium.

Re: A backyard tub or pond setup

Tried growing in tubs like that previously, didn't quite work out for me, everything just sort of... went off, and they ended up dying. Figured something a bit closer to an actual aquarium setup might do the trick.

A backyard tub or pond setup

I've recently got my back garden tub/pond up and running, been using it to grow a few extra plants. So far I've had some success with dwarf water lettuce, guppy grass, java moss and java fern. If you've got any other suggestions I'd love to give them a try.

I've also got a sponge filter in there ...
