What type of cichlid do you have in there? Any aggression issues with the tankmates? Got a pic of your setup? Try adding a powerhead to the tank, see if that gets them out of hiding.

Totally agree. Stick to aquarium-safe cleaners or just hot water and elbow grease.

Man, that's a rough situation. I'd also recommend using activated carbon in your filter to help remove any leftover chemicals. It's a lifesaver for stuff like this.
