Re: exploring unconventional alliances
It's pretty funny that the Ram can't catch those speedy Corys or the quick Rummys. I've had my fair share of unexpected alliances over the years - often due to my own lack of knowledge. I recall keeping Tiger Barbs with angelfish when I was younger, and surprisingly, they coexisted peacefully ...

@connorlinderman I'm a bit lost with your answer - could you clarify?

Re: Discussion at the aquarium of the pacific
My first aquarium experience was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium back in '90. It was truly captivating. I later visited the Tennessee Aquarium, which also left a great impression on me. When the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta opened, I got a year-long pass and would often take my kids there - we'd sit and ...

Re: Getting started with a walstad aquarium
Having started out in gardening on land before moving to aquatic plants, I can tell you that lack of light is likely the reason for plants not having leaves on their lower parts. As plants grow upwards in a tank, they tend to block the light that reaches the bottom, resulting in bare stems near ...

Re: Best time to feed fish: first light or last light in the aquarium cycle
I tend to feed on a whim, often a bit too much, then take a break for a couple of days. When I do feed, I usually give them just a small amount, so it gets eaten quickly, mostly.

Re: discussing the role of older tanks
I once had a unique setup - a metal frame, slate bottomed 2 gallon tank from the 1930s. It's a shame I lost it over the years. The slate bottom was a clever feature, allowing you to place a candle or lamp underneath for warmth at night. I managed to reseal it and get it working again.
I also ...

That's awesome, expanding it to include GH & KH would be really useful too.

Re: Introducing larger dwarf neon rainbows to an existing young group
Honestly, I've never been too fussed about fish competing for food, mainly because I've always erred on the side of caution and overfed them. To counterbalance this, I tend to do more frequent water changes and occasionally skip a day or two to give the tank a break. I think if you were to overfeed ...

Re: A south american tank for discus and other species
I've been dreaming of a Discus-only tank for ages, and I think I've found the perfect setup - a 250-gallon tank, roughly 6 feet by 30 inches by 30 inches. I'm thinking of starting with 3-5 Discus, maybe more.
For tankmates, I'm looking at bigger, peaceful fish that thrive in warmer temperatures ...

Re: A south american tank for discus and other species
I found that build I mentioned earlier - it's actually a 125 gallon, but this guy really went all out, so I think you might still find some inspiration. This is the kind of setup I wish I had the skills to create - the guy's got total control from his phone and hardly has to lift a finger for ...
