Re: A big shake-up is underway, and those panda garra are surprisingly tiny.

Good luck indeed, I feel you, catching fish with a net can be quite the ordeal. I recall my own experience moving my fish from a 15-gallon tank to a larger one, it was a real challenge, especially since I was converting the 15-gallon into a shrimp tank.

I had to remove as much as I could, but ...

Re: Who are your favorite gardeners or plant tenders?

My otos and nerite snails do a decent job keeping the biofilm in check and nipping at the algae. They're not perfect, but they're a big help. In my smaller tank, the corys are like little vacuum cleaners - they dive into the thick plant growth, looking for food and occasionally uprooting some of the ...

Re: Aquarium plumbing overhaul: my replumbing experience today

I'm still a bit perplexed - pipes sweating, is it solely due to temperature differences and the air's moisture levels, or does the water's parameters also play a role? I'm guessing there's some sort of thermal dynamics happening with the softener, but I'm not entirely sure. Our water is pretty soft ...

Re: exploring unconventional alliances

It's pretty funny that the Ram can't catch those speedy Corys or the quick Rummys. I've had my fair share of unexpected alliances over the years - often due to my own lack of knowledge. I recall keeping Tiger Barbs with angelfish when I was younger, and surprisingly, they coexisted peacefully ...

Re: Discussion at the aquarium of the pacific

My first aquarium experience was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium back in '90. It was truly captivating. I later visited the Tennessee Aquarium, which also left a great impression on me. When the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta opened, I got a year-long pass and would often take my kids there - we'd sit and ...

Re: Getting started with a walstad aquarium

Having started out in gardening on land before moving to aquatic plants, I can tell you that lack of light is likely the reason for plants not having leaves on their lower parts. As plants grow upwards in a tank, they tend to block the light that reaches the bottom, resulting in bare stems near ...

Re: Best time to feed fish: first light or last light in the aquarium cycle

I tend to feed on a whim, often a bit too much, then take a break for a couple of days. When I do feed, I usually give them just a small amount, so it gets eaten quickly, mostly.

Re: discussing the role of older tanks

I once had a unique setup - a metal frame, slate bottomed 2 gallon tank from the 1930s. It's a shame I lost it over the years. The slate bottom was a clever feature, allowing you to place a candle or lamp underneath for warmth at night. I managed to reseal it and get it working again.

I also ...
