Java Fern is a great starter plant. Just don't bury the rhizome, or it'll rot. Tie it to a rock or driftwood instead.

Yep, low-tech can be tricky. What's your lighting like? I've had success with a simple LED on for 6 hours, no direct sunlight. Also, try root tabs if you haven't, they're a game-changer.


Root tabs are solid advice. I'd add that liquid ferts like Seachem Flourish can help too, just dose lightly ...
