Re: is my discus too thin?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll try adding pellets and look into PraziPro. They're active and eat well, just not growing much. Got them at about 2 inches, now they're around 3.5.

That growth rate's a bit slow for 6 months. Might be genetics if they're from a sketchy breeder. But yeah ...

Re: is my discus too thin?

How old were they when you got them? Juveniles can take a while to bulk up, especially if they weren't well-started. Also, what's their behavior like? Are they active, or do they kinda just chill in one spot? That can tell you a lot about their health.

Re: discus tank maintenance schedule

I'd skip the sand if you're battling stress. Bare bottom's easier to keep pristine. My crew's in a 120-gallon bare tank, 30% changes every other day. Zero issues. Also, what's your filter media? Swap to coarse sponge if you're running ceramic—traps less gunk.

Re: can discus thrive in hard water?

It's a gamble. Some lines are hardier than others. I'd start with juveniles—they adapt better. My current group's from a local breeder who raises them in 250 ppm water. They're in a 90-gallon, heavily planted, with Co2 injection. No issues so far.

Re: best discus food for growth

Beef heart mix is the way to go for growth. I've been using a homemade blend with shrimp, vitamins, and a bit of spinach. My Discus went from 2 inches to 5 in six months. Key is high protein, small portions, and frequent feedings. Also, try adding some live blackworms if you can find them.

I test weekly. It's the only way to catch swings before they become a problem. What test kit are you using?

Re: magnesium importance for corals

Magnesium is crucial for stabilizing alk and calcium. If it's too low, your other params will swing like crazy. I keep mine at 1280 ppm, and my tank's been chill ever since. What salt mix are you using?

Celsius to Fahrenheit Conversion

I've noticed we've got a lot of folks on this forum who use Celsius, but for us Americans who are used to Fahrenheit, I figured it's worth sharing a quick trick I've learned - there's an easy way to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Take a Celsius temperature, double it, then subtract 10% and finally ...

Not enough time

I was initially planning on stocking my 75 with 6-7 discus and some rams, but after getting the tank, I realized I don't have the time to devote to the discus. So, I've reconsidered and I'm now thinking of going with just tetras, rams, and some cory catfish instead. I've already found a reliable ...
