Which is better for my aquarium: root tabs or aqua soil?
I'm setting up a new tank and I'm after a nutrient-rich substrate that'll support a heavily planted aquarium. I've had good results with aqua soil in the past, but after 8-10 months it breaks down into a powder, causing more problems than it's worth - my internal filter impeller's clogged up a few ...

Re: Growing java moss in a fry tank
It sounds like you're dealing with a case of Blue green algae, also known as Cyanobacter bacteria. This stuff is basically a photosynthetic bacteria that thrives on nutrients, low oxygen levels, red light and slow water movement - pretty much the perfect storm for it to take hold.
To combat this ...

Growing java moss in a fry tank
Had this issue in my old tank years back, now it's popped up again in my fry tank - anyone got a clue what's triggering it?

Re: when a hanging pot clip fails: dealing with an overgrown plant
I've had a similar issue with a peace lily. A new growth pushed against the back of the tank, forcing the plant away from the glass. I've trimmed it back multiple times, but now I'm thinking of redesigning the lid with larger openings. This will also give me room for an external filter inlet and ...

Re: Improving topsoil quality and composition
I've used a peat-free top soil from Homebase in my 90L tank. It's worked a treat with the plants, but be careful not to overdo it as the nutrients can leach into the water column. I've got a 1/2 inch layer under a 2-inch gravel cap and that seems to be the sweet spot. As tworoses said, it's worth ...

Re: Buying fish online vs in-store: which is best for you
I've had one online fish order experience. The UK-based company I chose had a good reputation. October was when I placed the order, during a cold snap, and they actually phoned me to postpone delivery due to the cold temps - which made sense to me. I'd ordered for myself and a friend - 6 juvenile ...

Re: Celebrating small wins
I got back into fishkeeping after adopting a 5-gallon tank from an undergrad in my lab who was relocating. The tank came with a single neon tetra, the last of a small school. I figured I had to name her, it'd be weird not to. I chose Jelly, as in jelly bean, and also my little Jelly-fish – I know ...

Re: A classic campfire treat: what is eggs on a log?
Looks to me like snail eggs. I've got pond snails in all my tanks, and I'm always seeing those gel-like clusters.
The first pic is what a fresh cluster looks like, and the second is one that's matured.
