Re: discus breeding tank water depth

Yo, shallow tanks are sketchy for breeding. I'd go at least 16 inches deep, no cap. My Discus freaked out in a 12-inch tank, but chilled when I moved 'em to a deeper one. Got a 75-gallon now, 20 inches deep, and they're spawning like crazy.

Re: best discus tank feeding routine

Gravel's not ideal for Discus. Sand's easier to clean and safer for them. If you're gonna switch, do it slow to avoid stressing them out. Maybe add a thin layer first, see how they react.

Re: best discus tank feeding routine

Once a day's fine for adults, but they'll thrive with more. Just keep portions small to avoid messing with water quality. What's your substrate? Sand's better for them, less chance of food getting trapped.

Re: best discus tank feeding routine

Twice a day might not cut it for Discus, especially if they're juveniles. I feed mine 4 times a day, small portions of beef heart mix, frozen brine shrimp, and high-quality pellets. They're in a 100 gallon with sand substrate and driftwood. Temp's at 86°F, and I do 50% water changes twice a week ...

Re: can discus eat live brine shrimp?

I've been using live brine shrimp for years with no problems. My Discus are in a 120-gallon with a sump, and I feed them shrimp twice a week. Key is to hatch your own or buy from a trusted seller. I use a 10-gallon tank with a sponge filter to hatch them. Water's at 82°F, and I add a bit of salt to ...

Re: Why discus eggs don't hatch?

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna test my TDS and maybe move them to a smaller tank. Parents are about 18 months old, so maybe they're still learning. Appreciate the help!

No prob, man. Keep us posted. Oh, and if you move them, acclimate slow. Discus hate sudden changes, even if the water's ...

Re: Why discus eggs don't hatch?

Had the same issue last year. Check your TDS, bro. Discus eggs need soft water, like under 100 ppm. Also, any other fish in there? Even tetras can stress them out. My pair didn't chill till I moved them to a species-only tank.

Re: A small hole on the dorsal fin: is it ph related?

Honestly, I think you're overreacting. That hole is barely noticeable. If you're doing regular water changes, like every few days, your tank is probably fine and your fish is healthy. Its immune system is likely strong from all the good care. If that sounds like you, I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: why is discus tank ph dropping?

Yep, subway's spot on. RO water's sketchy for Discus unless you remineralize. I run a mix of 70% RO and 30% tap to keep things chill. Also, check your filter media. If it's packed with bio balls or ceramic rings, they can acidify over time. Swap some out for fresh ones or add a bag of crushed coral ...

Re: Filtration advice for a 48-gallon tank

I'm a bit skeptical about the need for overfiltering. Why not just set up the tank and do regular water changes? I mean, filters just clean the water, but they're not a substitute for a good water change.

If you keep the bioload low, you can get away with changing half the water once a week. I'd ...
