Re: How many API Bio-Chem Stars to use?

Sounds like a plan. The 407's got good flow, so 5 should work. Keep an eye on the nitrates after a couple weeks. If they creep up, toss in another one.

Re: How many API Bio-Chem Stars to use?

I've used Bio-Chem Stars in my 40 breeder, and they're pretty solid. Started with 4 like the box says, but bumped it to 5 after a month. My nitrates dropped from 20 to 5 ppm, so it's worth messing with. How often do you do water changes?

Re: Fish moving tips and questions

Agree with firenzo on the separate containers. Also, keep the filter media wet in tank water to preserve the bacteria. You don't wanna crash your cycle after the move. How long will the trip take?

Second this. Even a cheap DIY setup can make a difference. Just watch for pH swings if you're not consistent with dosing.

Re: algae vs plants - who wins?

Had the same issue in my 40 breeder. Reduced light to 5 hours, added a bunch of fast growers like Hornwort, and upped my water changes to twice a week. Algae's on the ropes now. How often are you changing water, coralone?

Re: Is my betta sleeping too much

Yay, Sashimi's up and moving around now. Thanks so much for all the help and advice, I really appreciate it. I'm not entirely sure what worked, but I'm just glad to see him swimming around and being his usual self.

Re: Is my betta sleeping too much

I picked up a Nutrafin water conditioner - thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I'm still waiting on the water test kit, but I'll get that soon. I'm gonna follow the guide you sent me, happyone, and I'll make sure to get everything sorted out for Sashimi and Escargot.

Re: Is my betta sleeping too much

I also have a Golden Mystery Snail, his name is Escargot, so that helps with eating some of the waste in the tank.

Re: Is my betta sleeping too much

I've got the softer type of plastic plants with really soft leaves, so I'm hoping those won't be a problem for Sashimi. The filter was already installed when I got the tank, and it was set to a slow mode, so I didn't have to do anything to adjust it. I know I said I'd post some photos and videos ...

Re: Is my betta sleeping too much

Hi and welcome to the forum, brisk.

I'm going to take a guess here, assuming your water quality is good - no ammonia or nitrite, and nitrates are under 20ppm - and your fish isn't sick, it's possible Sashimi is experiencing something similar to jet lag.

If your Betta was recently imported and ...
