Re: can chalice corals tolerate low light?

Chalices are pretty adaptable, but it depends on the species. Some will fade under low light, others might just grow slower. What's your current PAR reading? Mine do fine at around 75 PAR, but anything below 50 and they start looking dull.

Agreed. PAR is key here. If you don't have a meter ...

Re: Betta tank cycling guide

No problem! Let us know how it goes. And if you hit any snags, just ask. Cycling can be tricky, but it's worth doing right.

Re: Betta tank cycling guide

With a 5 gallon and a sponge filter, you're looking at around 4-6 weeks for a full cycle. The live plants will help, but you still need to monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. Dose ammonia to 2ppm and track how fast it converts to nitrite, then nitrate. Once you hit 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite ...

Re: White bubbles on tank surface

White bubbles on the surface usually indicate excess protein or organic waste. How often are you doing water changes? Also, what's your feeding routine like? Overfeeding can contribute to this issue.

Re: Is this a good site for fish?

If you're in Western Canada, I personally use Ocean Aquatics, their site is oceanaquatics.com/store - should give you some good options to consider.

Re: Optimizing sps longevity through acclimation

I've had great results with Bayer on SPS and from what I've heard, LPS and softies can handle it too. Just to reiterate, Bayer is strictly for dipping, not for in-tank treatment like Interceptor.

Re: Optimizing sps longevity through acclimation

I've also noticed something interesting - during the Bayer dip, my acros seem to have amazing polyp extension.

Re: Optimizing sps longevity through acclimation

I had the same reaction when I first heard about it, I'm still trying to wrap my head around using an insecticide on my corals. Trust me, I'm still skeptical but I'm hearing it's very effective.

Just make sure you take the necessary precautions - gloves, goggles, the whole nine yards. Use separate ...

Re: Optimizing sps longevity through acclimation

I've been experimenting with the Bayer dip on my own SPS, specifically the red dragon and Hawkins Acroporas that had those pesky red bugs. I used 10ml per 2 cups for 10 minutes, and every 2 minutes, I'd give the acro a few quick turkey basts. Worked like a charm - those red bugs were gone for good.
